@Brendan, I think she’s just having a flashback to the last bad guy she faced and trying to remember that he shouldn’t be involved this time. Geez, I don’t think Marc has any right to look pissed off about a bad joke here.
@Xel Unknown, yeah but two strips after he made a CSI joke at a murder scene? I’m just saying he has no room to be throwing stones for a badly made joke for a little while.
I hope you throw out some really, really vague shout-outs here, T. I mean, super vague. Or super funny. It’d be hilarious to see some old-school cartoon villain here. I mean, those guys had to have hobbies, right? I bet the Claw did crosswords like nobody’s business.
excuse me. I dont get the bad joke at all. Is it a phonetical joke? or a distortion of some idiomatic phrase? an obscure trivia quote?
i’m just curious. english is not my native tongue, and i’m lost at translation 😀
thanx in advance
@Drakkin, When reading crossword clues you usually say the number and the directing (one across or one down). Bax says one down for a different reason in the fourth panel and then brings up the fact he did so – drawing attention to the fact that it was an unintentional pun. As a crossword fan Hilda has probably heard that sort of joke (both accidentally and on purpose) a million times. Hope that helps.
@ Sri: Marc is annoyed because Hilda is annoyed. Also, he lays his hand on her back for no apparent reason. Also, he wants to punch a guy that smiles at Hilda.
@Thomas, I think you have a very good point. I hadn’t put the aggressive protection and slightly intimate touch together. I guess they’ve gotten close since that conversation at the end of the Single Night arc.
@Thomas: That might be the true reson for Marc’s dislike of that joke. And Like Sri said, it makes alot more sence and stuff… They have gotten closer since that talk after all.
So, who did Lisa Simpson marry that her last name is now Long?
…Merl = Feddyg? Eh?
It’s Inappropriate Jokes Week for Team Alpha! 😀

@Sri: Bad jokes might just get on Mark’s nevres… I know they tend to get on mine.
@Fiyah: I wonder that too…
@Storyline: Still trying to find out what it is about you that I’m enjoying so much!
I wonder if Lisa Simpson’s married name is a reference to Heinlein’s “Lazarus Long”?
Well, that or it’s a nod to Shelley Long. I’ve always assume the Diane Chambers characters was one of the inspirations for Lisa!
I’m assuming that Deep Grey is a crossword-solving computer. With severe depression.
I’m more concerned about Adrian Lynx and why he has twelve New Israeli Shekels.
I love the reference to Will Shortz as a secret spook.

@Sri: Totally agree with you there… Totally agree. And on second though about this. Maybe Marc’s more in “Dude it’s not that funny” type of mood…

You say this like he hasn’t already thrown out some super-vague references, Locke…

@Sri
