I choose to believe that Wheaties was toying with her, because he could have crushed her neck long before she had the chance to throw a couple of punches back the other way or dropkick him. Happy for Di to live, though.
Also glad to know that the Daxter ship is alive and floating!
Maybe he wasn’t toying with her, but he isn’t really all that bad, just easily pissed off. When he had her (presumably) helpless, he just couldn’t bring himself to finish the job.
@Arky @Joraiem Or maybe she pissed Wheaties off just enough to get him so angry that he just wants to watch her suffocate. I guess it’s also possible that he would let go after she lost consciousness, but he seems grimly determined at this point.
Wheaties is a bully who likes to watch his opponents fail to defeat him, especially if they style themselves warriors. I hope she broke his windpipe 😀
Considering how hard he had to work to break her leg I find it hard to believe he could crush her neck with one hand. Necks really aren’t delicate. You can collapse the windpipe, constrict the arteries, but they all spring back after the pressure is released.
Besides, even if he could, he wants to watch her die. He’s mad.
I appreciate that she’s even got the Frank Miller ‘Batman’ style narration still going. I hear a little of the fight from Year One, but that might be my imagination! At any rate, I find it harder and harder to believe that there was a time when I disliked Di.
Also, kick-ass kicks from our heroes seem to be a thing in this chapter. Rikk, Hilda, and now Di have all gotten one in.
This was a little confusing to read since I couldn’t tell what was Di’s thoughts and what was her Dad’s.
I know Wheaties is near invulnerable, but either that super suit of Di’s is protecting her neck from being crushed or he was just toying with her. I prefer to think it’s the former since I’m tired of the bad guys doing that. It’s beyond cliche.
humm i thing he was enjoying watching her suffocate . mostly because she’s beeh humiliating him for most of the fight. fist she Goaded him into a fight then once in public she Ran drawing him into a chase. after wars she begins to hit him with everything around. Concert mix trucks fire and pipe.
I think Wheaties main power is adaption to physical threats in the same manner that Animal’s main power was healing. the size and super strength are just perks
When Di on page 18 gets her neck squeezed by Wheaties in panel 2, and the blood comes out of her mouth, I was sure it meant her spine was crushed, but obviously it’s not as she’s still fighting here; still, there was blood and a big sound effect then, and I think she has a crushed larynx, or some other severe structural damage… she may not be able to breathe even though Wheaties let go.
Meanwhile, I usually wouldn’t think Wheaties would be hurt much by the throat kick, EXCEPT: (1) huuuge sound effect, and (2) invulnerability may be just about gone (last pipe hit made his arm bloody).
OK, now. Wheaties–looks down for the count, at least.
Animal– dead.
Link– trapped in a pocket dimension
Mechtech– dead, right? And not really an “Excaliber” battle anyhow.
So, who do they need Excaliber for? Makes me wonder if Hyperman ain’t really dead….
The adaptation idea is a good one, except repeated whacking with the pipe earlier did do some damage. Which would be the opposite of what would happen if he was adaptive, right?
Maybe he’s actually projecting defenses telepathically, or something? So the more he gets hit, the more draining it is, and if he isn’t focusing on protecting some part of his body, it doesn’t work. It would explain why she can get some surprise hits in, and why she can wear down his defenses.
I’m not saying Wheaties is done– just that at this point, as a character, Di needs to get this win on her own. Which begs the question– what’s Excalibur for?
Well okay, then!
TSU~KI~I~I~I!

This strip just made me break out into a huge grin.

Wheaties, sticking out your tongue at others is just RUDE.
It’s also possible that, after the beating he’s been getting, Wheaties simply isn’t at full strength.
@Stephen Bierce: This would be “geri” rather than “tsuki”, I believe. 😉
Gyakuten kick?
@Bartimaeus – this is definitely a TAKE THAT! moment rather than a HOLD IT!
And ballet for the win!
I can’t read the big word.
Ballet toes are super deadly. OMG. I’d rather be hit in the throat with a sledge hammer.
More surface area.
I think the word is KWHAK

Oh good I was right about the redemption that had been bugging me forever cause I was sure I was missing it.
The word, I think, is KWHAKK.

This comic is sooooo good!

This fight is far from over. Until Di figures out how to beat him, they’re going to go back and forth.
I think e_voyager has it right. His power is adaptation. Di needs to rotate damage types. Hit with fire, then hit him with liquid anything at -270 C.

Maybe relevant?
@Aydr. humm that’s entirely possible also i looked up one of the pages that made me wonder about Wheaties powers http://www.faans.com/backstory-6-of-24/

We have to wait the see Alison again to find out.
