Is Rikk even aware that all he has to do to mix animal blood with his own is to rub it inside his eyelids or under his tongue? He could even bite his own wrist for a deeper cut if he wanted, it’s not like the healing blood wouldn’t stop the bleeding…
Welp – I don’t think he’s upset he won’t be able to mix the blood with his own. Just getting it on him is probably enough. I think he’s upset because he didn’t want to be cured.
Upon further thought, maybe it’s less that he wanted to die and more that he didn’t want Rumy’s violent actions to be validated in her mind by indirectly leading to his cure.
Soulson is still around and even though Rikk might be harder to kill with Animal’s blood he can still die or be trapped on another world. And without a teleporter I’m not too optimistic about Di or Shanna’s chances.
Back to Rikk’s motivations … I’d rather assumed he was thinking about the brain dead fellow he was supposed to switch bodies with. Perhaps Animal could’ve cured him. And, really, the list of people who need curing is effectively infinite. Plus, he hates anyone dying on his watch, even the enemies. Especially enemies who don’t seem to be the evil masterminds.
We’re seeing Rikk being Rikk. He probably wanted to avoid Animal’s unnecessary death. I don’t think Rikk is running away from the gore, I think he just wants to stay away from Animal’s claws. In any case, I don’t think Rikk’s bukkake frosting is necessarily going to save him. It may well be that Animal has to be alive in order for his blood to be effective (every other cure Rikk tried had an impediment thus far, so why stop now? ).
He may have been hoping that the panacea would be available for the world, but I think that there is a possibility that Rikk really is just sick of cheating death- especially since, even if it’s not his fault and not the intention, his life is once again saved as a direct result of the death of another. That’s gotta take a toll on a guy like Rikk.
I’m pretty sure even Rikk isn’t goody-two-shoes enough to be legitimately upset about his own survival via the death of a mass murderer. What does make more sense is him being legitimately upset that no one else can be cured with Animal’s blood now. For example, Shanna could really use that stuff right about now.
I’m more confused that the actual Mechtech fight was apparently just… skipped over? Last panel, she was winning. I realize it’s hard to depict, or even explain, what’s happening in cyberspace, but… you’d think at least one panel would be drawn between “Mechtech is winning handily” (three pages ago) and “Mechtech is dead” (this page).
Aydr – that sounds right to me. LockeZ – Dotty used the earcone-thing to jam MechTech’s signal. Her body was already down and when her transmitter went down she couldn’t maintain a presence in cyberspace either. We didn’t see it on panel but Baxter’s conversation w/ Dotty a few strips back implies it.
IDE/Theory: Rikk is just being a fan here. He knew Rikk could never get killed off, but he was hoping for a change of pace anyway.
In all seriousness, I hope he’s distraught because he didnt want Animal to have to die… maybe because for all the horrible things the Cuckoos have done, if Animal is alive he has incredible potential to help the human race. As is, he’s just good until they run out of blood. But I dont understand why he would have ran away. If Rikk really is upset that he’s going to live, if he really didn’t want to be saved… well, that would be very out of character, and considering how frustrated he was with Ally when she had accepted her own death, it would make him a hypocrite, too.
He wanted to die because he KNOWS he has guaranteed paradise waiting for him, and suicide is a mortal sin. He sold his soul to GOD, and he is probably tired at this point; he wants to hurry up and get to heaven.
Too bad it seems God has other plans for him that don’t include an extended rest. God bought and paid for his soul and now He wants His dollar’s worth.
@LIch Mong some how that just doesn’t seem very Rikkish thing to do., i bet he was hoping to convert animal the way he’s being trying to convert soul son. he wasn’t to redeem the monster with the childish mind if he can.
I’m not sure Mechtech is dead. I think Dotty saying “always make backups” implies Mech was downloaded to the earpiece device. Or overwritten, not having a backup. Either way, she’s archives… er, history.
I think Rikk clearly wanted to live and obtain a sample of Animal’s blood for a cure – that was the whole point of at least part of this exercise. While that objective is now complete thanks to Animal blowing up, there’s no way Rikk would be satisfied with “winning” like this. Surely not like this.
I guess we will find out in the next few strips if Rikk is upset primarily because Animal is dead, or because it means he wont be able to save his injured friends. I could definitely see him in the next strip mopping up whatever blood he can save and pleading with Bellhop to teleport him to the wounded.
considering Rikk was part of a plan to hit animal with excalibur earlier I’m not sure what is the cause of this frustration. My thoughts actually turned to if Animal was overcuring himself perhaps his blood is overcured or cured out and useless now. Also I think possibly the fact this was a suicidal move might be affecting him.
Joke answer: Aww he used self destruct I hate it when they do that.
I don’t think Rikk knows about the wounded. He’s got no idea who’s in trouble or where to go.
As for Dotty’s “Always make backups”, that’s not in reference to Mechtech having backups. She’s repeating her father’s mantra, with regards to the backup plan they had for if the virus failed.
Y’know, I never bought Animal as “Bad guy”. He’s not really sophisticated enough. He’s a bad guy because “Bad guys” take care of him, so he trusts them. The same as the kindest, most loyal dog will fight to defend it’s kind owner, even if that owner is a genocidal maniac. THEY don’t know better, nor care. I can’t imagine Rikk not wanting to avoid the death of the Cuckoo that wasn’t necessarily doing something wrong. Rikk doesn’t want to kill anyone, and he especially prefers to save the weaker. Those who orchestrate evil, he’s less… torn about.
Als, that last “NO!” doesn’t look like one of anguish or sorrow or horror, but of anger at failing. He’s dedicated to saving everyone he can, and it’s just frustrating/infuriating to be unable to save yet /another/ person.
Did Donna teleport back to Baxter off-screen somewhere? Last time we saw her before she went “into the Matrix” was in low Earth orbit with a dragon flapping wings against “aether”.
@Commiekeebler – I’ve been trying to wrap my brain around the same thing, but now I’m starting to think Rikk was actually trying to stop Animal: “Dont! Let us beat you!” rather than “Don’t let us beat you!” The syntax may just have been confusing.
Once in cyberspace, the exit point for Donna’s body may have been determined by the location of Mechtech’s body – but yeah, I’m having a hard time with the plausibility of the whole Mechtech fight too.
Well, that takes care of everyone except Wheaties. Too bad humanity lost the potential omni-cure though.
He was running away… Rikk wanted to die??
Maybe he was trying to confuse Animal by running away some more.
Is Rikk even aware that all he has to do to mix animal blood with his own is to rub it inside his eyelids or under his tongue? He could even bite his own wrist for a deeper cut if he wanted, it’s not like the healing blood wouldn’t stop the bleeding…

Please elaborate. I’ve no clue why he’d want that. Sounds interesting.
Upon further thought, maybe it’s less that he wanted to die and more that he didn’t want Rumy’s violent actions to be validated in her mind by indirectly leading to his cure.

My guess is that he is Just being Rikk. as Rikk he is still trying to save everyone.
I think he’s upset over a senseless death.
We’re seeing Rikk being Rikk. He probably wanted to avoid Animal’s unnecessary death. I don’t think Rikk is running away from the gore, I think he just wants to stay away from Animal’s claws. Any way, I hope Hilda is OK.
I’m not sure why there is even questioning here… he said a few pages back he wanted animal to live.

Rick’s motivation and change of heart is unexplained. We saw him goad Animal into explosive overhealing prior. Why, really, is he upset now?
OF COURSE!
He wanted to die because he KNOWS he has guaranteed paradise waiting for him, and suicide is a mortal sin. He sold his soul to GOD, and he is probably tired at this point; he wants to hurry up and get to heaven.

If he’s frustrated about killing Animal, why was he goading Animal into over-healing in the previous strip?
It’s not adding up.
