In this strip I’m not so certain I can say Feddyg is dead and since Zaha mentioned among the items they had was a strength enhancing skin suit and devices capable of making illusions I wouldn’t put Jesse on the casualty list yet too.
That sucks I mean I didn’t even bother to read it because I saw from the pics that he got fried so why read about the dead’s last thoughts other him trying to prove he can be good?
The comic overall isn’t about Jesse, but this isn’t the first time a minor character has been ganked without a whole lot of flare given to them. I by no means aim to disparage the man, but this is one of the recurring faults of T’s writing. Things proceed too quickly at times, as if he grows bored with his own story and just wants it to end. T is by no means a bad writer, as he is a fantastic idea man, I just think his execution could use a little work. Take your time, T, let the audience spend a little time getting to know your characters, even the minor ones a little bit before their big finish. Then again, I might be proven wrong entirely and this’ll prove to be a rather poignant scene where Jesse WON’T GO DOWN. He just keeps standing there, driving through the pain, trying to talk to Charlotte through grated teeth. If only to distract her enough for a battered and bruised Donna to knock her ass into next week’s Homestuck where she is promptly stabbed through the heart by Lord English. The Order had Meta-Comic powers, if there was ever a time for some kind of crossover, that’d be the funniest way to do it!
I’ve got to say I’m disappointed at how many of you are seriously assuming we just witnessed Jesse’s death. There is obviously more to that last panel than there appears.
It might well be an illusion, guys. The whole thing about tricking Charlotte…? Maybe make her think her powers don’t work on him because he’s on the side of god?
It’s POSSIBLE Jesse is still alive, yes. But frankly? He’s never been portrayed as a particularly important character, and the people he’s with dont trust him. If the Jesse we’re looking at is an illusion, then it’s an illusion with thought boxes. If Jesse is somehow surviving being struck by magical lightning, then it’s poor art, because it looks like he just got disintegrated. And if that lightning is doing something else, then there’s been nothing to foreshadow it, because if Charlotte has any plan beyond flipping out and attacking anyone within range, AEGIS doesnt know about it.
Yes, Fans pulls a lot of plot twists out of left field. Yes, death in comics is cheap. But come ON. Look at that last panel. That’s either a disintegration or a teleport, and SKADABOOOOOM DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A TELEPORT. We got a panel of foreshadowing, and that was that. If Jesse comes back, it seems much more likely that it’ll be because this entire chain of events is undone by time travel.
Well, it sure looks like Jesse is being atomized. If he’s not dead, maybe it’ll be because he’s only started to get disintegrated and still has a few seconds left. Also, based on the art, it could be a ‘disintegrate clothes’ spell. That silhouette looks pretty clothesless. Maybe all this freedom has gotten Charlotte really horny.
Then again, maybe she’s pulling a Tiki Wiki and she’s making it look like he’s dead, but I don’t hold out much hope for that one.
@Agent Boogeyman – Well, it might also be a way to subvert audience expectations. Which is a fair trick. I was kind of digging Jesse’s whole Peter-Sellers-plus-artificial-memories schtick, but if this is the way he has to go out, it isn’t too bad. His character arc’s complete. He’s Become the Mask.
Wonder how that large German lady “tanked” the purple lightning for so long without disintegrating? I thought her powers were only used to teleport people around?
@Commiekeebler: The teleporting wasn’t even her power…at first. The seven members of the Order of the Dragon performed a ritual that gave every single member the powers of all seven. Donna herself can do everything the Order did.
I find this a fitting end for Jesse. Maybe he didn’t -need- development, maybe he had found who he was long ago and is facing it’s natural conclusion-some service doesn’t end except to help preserve the whole.
This isn’t a plot twist nor is it out of left field. This is pretty much exactly what anyone who knows how action movies work expected. Campbell’s been slowly killing off the cast, and I was pretty positive that one of the three prisoners was going to turn good in their final moments and then die for it.
Tim or Rikk is next. Tim is redundant since his daughter Dotty showed up – someone who shares a family history with him and can do everything he does with computers but be CRYPTIC about everything she says is far more useful from a storytelling perspective. I espect him to die as soon as Julia and the prisoners make it to Ally. Rikk’s imminent death was predicted by Guthrie and leaves the team effectively leaderless, reducing the team’s power and making the threats vastly more meaningful. Also, both of them died today in the future that General Julie came from.
As I seem to remember, Jesse’s genetics have been messed with more than a bit. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a transformed version of Jesse, a la Shazam.
Only problem, what the heck kind of acronym would ‘Skadabooooom’ be anyway?
…RIP, Jesse. You died as you lived- getting cheated out of storyline involvement and character development.
…Jesse?

@antiquechairman – Ouch. Harsh. Accurate, but harsh.
That could have gone better…
You know, there is a bright side to this: how many people go out with not a whimper, not a bang, but a “SKADABOOOOOM”?
Ouch. >_<
“I will serve humanity. Until the day I die.”
SKADABOOOM
Welp, I guess that frees up his schedule for the rest of the week.
Ooooh… THAT’S gonna leave a mark…

Yeah, this too simple a way for Jesse to go out. This is playing a part in something.
I mean, even if he DID just bite the purple lightning, it’s probably likely he was just acting as bait.
It’s POSSIBLE Jesse is still alive, yes. But frankly? He’s never been portrayed as a particularly important character, and the people he’s with dont trust him. After we saw Will’s smoking skeleton only to discover HE was still alive, I’m not assuming anything until T rolls the credits.

Shades of Wheel of Time and the fight with a master manipulator

Skadaboom, skadaboom, will you do the fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning, very very frightening
Me!
Not sure if it’s a fluke of the Kirby Dots, but it almost looks like Jesse’s at the center of a heart-shaped explosion…
She’s not nuking him. She’s showering him with love, see- she’s a violet lantern, clearly.

Nah, Tim will make it, because he’s supposed to kill Mechtech later – unless the plot line changes too much due to time travelers interference.
Ah, you’re right. I thought Tim died on “the bad day”. But it was Rikk, Rumy and Will who died.
Well, I still think Tim’s gonna bite it as soon as they reach Ally. Dotty and Baxter can disable Mechtech.
Still wonder what happened to Marc to make him lose it.
Skadaboom?
Kirby dots?
Hmmmm..
As I seem to remember, Jesse’s genetics have been messed with more than a bit. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a transformed version of Jesse, a la Shazam.

The woman destroying Jesse doesn’t look much like Charlotte. Is it supposed to be Donna? I’m confused.
