EXT. APOLLO’S GARDEN

Apollo stands in front of our heroes, not sure whether to attack them again or not.

Kurt, the space cowboy, looks at Apollo with the mixture of grief and sternness that a cowboy might feel before shooting a horse with a broken leg.

McCoi is more upset. He is, as he’s so fond of reminding us, a doctor. And he can’t stand to see anything die.

Dotty melts into Kurt.
APOLLO
We are immortal, we gods, but
the Earth changed. Your
fathers changed. They turned
away until we were only
memories. A god cannot survive
as a memory. We need love,
admiration, worship, as you
need food...
Apollo runs out of words, then tries again.
APOLLO
I would have cherished you,
cared for you. I would have
loved you as a father loves
his children. Did I ask so
much?
KURT
We’ve outgrown you. You ask
for something we can no longer
give.
Apollo DISAPPEARS in this final speech.
APOLLO
(tearfully)
Dorothy, I loved you. I would
have made a goddess of you.
I’ve shown you my open heart.
See what you’ve done to me...
Zeus, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite,
you were right. Athena, you
were right. The time has
passed. There is no room for
gods. Forgive me, my old
friends. Take me. Take me.
Take me...

INT. HOTEL CALIFORNIA

RUMY
Apollo had a need I understand
very well. The need for an
audience. Clara, an actress,
has the same need. Without it,
an artist folds into
herself...

SHANNA
(uncertainly)
You’re setting yourselves up
to be crushed.

TIM THE FANBOY
(forcefully)
What if we’re not?

HARRY
I used to think like that,
"Fan-boy." Used to see every
battle as winnable. But it’s a
pipe dream.

Rikk claps his hands together once, signaling that discussion is now over.

RIKK
This is the Science Fiction
Club, Harry. We make pipe
dreams come true. So we’ll
feed her with love... and see
if we get our goddess back.
